Turn Markdown into a document that pastes cleanly into Docs, Word or email

Paste an answer from ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini, or any Markdown file, and see it as a formatted document. Copy it with its headings, lists, tables and code intact: no stray asterisks, no hash marks.

Have the words, need the page?

I turn copy like this into landing pages that get sign-ups: the structure, the proof and the speed, designed and built in code.

Why pasting from ChatGPT into Google Docs goes wrong

Chat apps write their answers in Markdown, a plain text format where # starts a heading and ** makes text bold. The chat window turns it into formatting as you read, but the copy you take away is often the raw text underneath. Paste that into Google Docs, Word or Gmail and the marks come with it: hash signs in front of headings, asterisks around bold words, pipes where a table should be.

This tool does the step the chat app skipped. It reads the Markdown, shows you the document it describes, and puts that document on your clipboard as formatted text.

How to copy an AI answer into Google Docs with its formatting

  • Copy the answer from ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini, or open your Markdown file and copy its text.
  • Paste it on the left. The right side shows the finished document.
  • Press Copy for Docs and Word (or Ctrl+Enter, ⌘Enter on a Mac).
  • In your document, paste with Ctrl+V or ⌘V. Headings arrive as real headings, so they show up in the document outline.

Google Docs can also paste simple Markdown itself once Markdown is turned on in its preferences, with Paste from Markdown in the right-click menu. That works well for short notes. This tool handles the cases it struggles with (tables, task lists, code blocks and AI leftovers) and works the same for Word, Outlook, Gmail and Notion.

Word, Outlook, Gmail and Notion

The copy holds both rich text and plain text, so each app takes the version it understands. Word and Outlook keep headings, lists, tables with borders and shaded code. Copy for email also sets a clean sans serif font, so the message looks the same in every inbox. Notion and Confluence turn the headings and lists into their own blocks.

Need the raw markup for a CMS or a website? Copy HTML gives clean HTML with no styles, and Download .html saves a page you can open in any browser.

What the AI clean-up removes

With Fix AI leftovers on, the tool removes the marks chat apps leave behind when you copy: file citations like 【4†source】, the hidden markers some apps put around web citations, zero-width spaces and the narrow no-break spaces that make words stick together. If a whole answer arrives wrapped in a code fence, it is unwrapped so it reads as a document again.

Turn em dashes into commas is there for anyone who would rather the text did not lean on dashes. Ranges like 2 to 9 written with a dash become a plain hyphen. For a full check of hidden characters, use the invisible character remover.

Tables, task lists and code

Tables keep their header row, borders and the alignment set in the Markdown, so numbers stay right aligned. Task lists become ☐ and ☑ characters, since documents drop form checkboxes. Code blocks keep their line breaks on a light grey background. Raw HTML inside the Markdown is shown as text, never run, and only web, email and relative links are kept.

Private by design

Everything happens in your browser. Your text is not uploaded, logged or kept, so it is safe for client documents, contracts and drafts. It is one of my free tools for product teams.

Questions people ask

  • Paste the answer into this tool, press Copy for Docs and Word, then paste into Google Docs with Ctrl+V or ⌘V. The asterisks and hash marks become bold text and real headings.
  • Partly. Once Markdown is turned on in Docs' preferences, it formats some Markdown as you type and offers Paste from Markdown when you right-click. For tables, task lists, code blocks and AI leftovers, and for Word and email, this tool gives a cleaner result.
  • Yes. Tables arrive with a header row, borders and the column alignment from the Markdown, in Google Docs, Word, Outlook and Gmail.
  • It was probably pasted as plain text. Ctrl+Shift+V (or Paste without formatting) drops the formatting, so use a normal Ctrl+V or ⌘V. If the Markdown itself escapes the marks with a backslash, they show on purpose.
  • Yes. Copy for Docs and Word works in Word on Windows, Mac and the web. To keep a file, Download .html saves a page that Word opens directly.
  • No. The conversion runs in your browser, so nothing you paste leaves your device.
  • Citation marks such as 【4†source】, the hidden markers some chat apps wrap around web citations, zero-width spaces, narrow no-break spaces, and a code fence wrapped around a whole answer.
